Seminar: From Alignment Coherence towards a new model for Ontology Matching, The 11th International Semantic Web Conference, Boston, USA

Ontology Matching is the process of determining correspondences between concepts and properties of two different ontologies. These correspondences express typically equivalence. Since the matched ontologies are logical theories, automatically generated correspondences can lead to incoherency. This talk starts by introducing the notion of alignment incoherence and presents techniques to resolve it. The fact that an alignment should be coherent, can also be exploited in an complete ontology matching approach that aims at generating an optimal matching solution. The notion of an optimal solution is explained and an example illustrates what this means in practice. Finally, a new approach for ontology matching is presented. This approach makes use of the previously presented techniques. The core idea of the new approach distinguishes between matching tokens on the one hand, and matching logical entities on the other hand. As a result of the distinction, interdependences between these two layers can be exploited. This results in some interesting effects that can improve the overall quality of the generated alignment.
